Purpose
In 2003 the Flatirons Photo Club started a digital study group to help
its members move into the age of digital photography. The digital study
group is moderated by Flatirons Photo Club members Murth Murthy and Russell Dohrmann.
To encourage new people to become members of the Flatirons Photo Club,
the Digital Study Group is open to anyone interested in digital photography
even if they are not current members of the Flatirons Photo Club.
Learning by Doing
In the fall of 2008 the Digital Study Group embarked on a new direction –
learning by doing (rather than learning through instruction). Assignments
are given each month, but as some participants are more advanced than
others any new techniques can be studied. This way each individual can
learn the techniques they are interested in and at their own pace. The use
of Photoshop is not required, Techniques and aesthetics can be learned,
Participants can also learn by hearing from others the processing steps used
to create their images. Participants can offer advice on how they might
approach an image.
Meeting Time and Location
The Digital Study Group meets once a month in the same location as the Flatirons
Photo Club. Meetings are held on the first Wednesday of each month. At the end of each
meeting there is time set aside for a Q&A session. The meetings start at 7:00 PM and
end at 9:00 PM.
Digital Projection of Images
Participants in the study group meetings are asked to create a digital image,
to bring it to the study group, and to describe the steps they went through to
create the final image. When possible the original image and the resulting final
image are both shown. Images are brought to the meeting on Compact Flash Drives
(Thumb Drives) for projection using the club’s digital projector. Original images
may be Camera RAW, JPEG, DNG, or TIFF. Processed images can be JPEG, TIFF,
or PSD (Photoshop).
